Nest

Trust, the senses, and first words — at the baby’s own pace.

The Nest is the smallest and quietest room in the house. Nine babies at most on any day, with one adult for every three — and on most mornings one more than that.

Babies here keep their own routines from home. If your daughter naps at 9:15 and has milk at 10, that is what happens here too, and we write it down so everyone in the room knows.

Settling in

Before your baby starts, their key person visits you at home or meets you here for an hour to learn how your baby likes to be held, fed and put down to sleep. The first visits are with you in the room; after that, a little longer each time.

Sleep

Every baby sleeps in their own cot, on their back, in a sleeping bag, in a room with the blinds down and someone in it. Sleep checks happen every ten minutes and are logged.

A day in this room

  1. Arrivals, breakfast for early risers
  2. Floor play: treasure baskets, mirrors, soft blocks
  3. Milk and a nap, whenever each baby is ready
  4. Out to the baby garden on blankets and in the buggy swing
  5. Lunch, fed one-to-one or sitting up together
  6. Second sleep in the cot room, checked every ten minutes
  7. Songs and rhymes with the key person
  8. Tea
  9. Sensory play: water, gloop, crinkly paper
  10. Quiet play until pick-up
